Say Nothing is another one of the most visually striking shows I got to work on during my time at FX Networks. While I was unable to see this project fully to completion due to me leaving the company, all of the work and concepts presented below are things I fully created on my own.
With the only exception being the final finished project was something I did not compile myself but the design style, typography, colors, and layouts were all created by me.
Like most projects, a lot of the early concepts I started with began with color, typography, and general layouts and trying to pin-point the right balance. Below are a lot of variations and explorations for typography and textures. Luckily I had the awesome key art to use as a starting point to help direct layout and visual hierarchy.
Next came the exploration of layouts for the Lead Story page and the Table of Contents. Early on I try to come up with different design style and iterate and see what sticks. Then based on feedback I continue to iterate and refine from there.
Then came some explorations and ideas for the Character page utilizing some of the typography and textures I initially came up with.
After getting feedback and notes on the first round of ideas, next came some more direction and exploration in terms of typography and layouts. The second round of design is typically where I create the bulk of the work and ideas and just experiment and iterate as much as I can.
Below you'll see a lot of similar layouts but with subtle differences like changes in typography, size, or color.
The Lead Story designs at this point were in a state of fluctuation where I was making small iterations in layouts and style. Some of these worked better than others but what mattered most at this point was making sure that the design style matched the tone and seriousness of the show.
Once some form or direction was established, I began working on layouts for other pages such as the Ratings Advisory page. Utilizing the amazing photography and visuals that were shot on set, I was able to experiment with some very cool layouts.
Also had some more time to experiment and further refine the layout of the Table of Contents page.
Here came a lot of experimentation with trying to figure out the layout of the Character Page. Mixing typography with textures and layout was a tough challenge when some characters and actors have lengthy bios. So finding the optimal balance between font size, layout, and placement of the person on the page was a challenge.
This third and final round was the final versions I worked on before leaving FX Networks. The layouts in this round were mostly what was used in the final version of the press kit with few exceptions and final retouched photos.
The final layout of the Table of Contents was mostly locked at this point but there was an ask to develop a couple more versions just to see if there was another potential layout but the one on the top right won.
These two Character pages were also the final layouts. In this round the choice of fonts were changed to be the same font as the show logo.
Also the layouts for the Lead Story and Ratings Advisory pages were what was chosen in the final with the exception of a different photo being used for the Ratings page.
These next couple of pages were a fun little experiment to see if more of the photography from the production of the series could be used throughout the press kit. So I was tasked with finding some quotes from the book and finding good cinematic type photos from set and make some interstitial quote pages.
While this was a fun little detour, ultimately this idea was stricken down and do not appear in the final version.
Below is the final version of the Say Nothing press kit. Again I did not compile, nor see this project through to the end. It was completed by a different designer but the design and layouts are mine, with few exceptions such as the Production Bios, Key Terms, and Production Credits pages.
