I don’t draw as much as I should. I’ve known that for a while now and it bugs the hell out of me. I used to draw a ton when I was a kid. Over the past few years I started teaching myself how to do hand-lettering. Which greatly improved my typography skills as a designer and helped me understand the anatomy of letters when I got into the font-making game.
Recently, over the past few weeks. I’ve been getting back into hand-lettering after a while of not doing much with it. I dusted off my Wacom Cintiq 13HD and started making some illustrations in a new style I’ve never really done before. Here are a select few of the ones I’ve done recently.
Now after doing all of these, it got me thinking. I decided to create a project where I would challenge myself to take sections of lyrics of some of my favorite songs or quotes and think about the meaning and concept behind them and make a hand-lettered illustration with it. And that exactly what I did. I decided to start up a blog called Of Pen And Purpose where I can upload the latest illustrations I make and share them with people. I just launched it this past saturday and posted up the first one using lyrics from the song “Strange Comfort” by one of my favorite hardcore bands called The Color Morale.
